Hair Care Products

  • Use a sulfate-free shampoo: Sulfates are a type of surfactant that can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle. Using a sulfate-free shampoo can help retain the natural moisture in your hair, keeping it healthy and nourished.
  • Condition your hair: Conditioner is an essential part of any hair care routine. It helps moisturize your hair and makes it easier to comb and style. After shampooing, apply a small amount of conditioner to your hair, focusing on the ends, and leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing it out.
  • Use a deep conditioning treatment: Deep conditioning treatments help nourish and repair your hair, especially if it is damaged or dry. You can use a store-bought deep conditioning treatment or make your own at home using ingredients like coconut oil or avocado.
  • Avoid using hair products with alcohol: Alcohol can dry out your hair and scalp, causing it to become brittle and prone to breakage. Look for hair products that are alcohol-free, or that contain natural oils to moisturize your hair.

Some of my favorite products recently have been from the Latina-owned small business Ceremonia. All their products are made with clean ingredients rooted in Latinx heritage. Shop Ceremonia and some of my other hair care faves below:

Styling

  • Avoid heat styling tools: Heat styling tools like hair straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers can damage your hair, causing it to become dry and brittle. If you must use heat styling tools, make sure to use a heat protectant spray and avoid using them on a high heat setting.
  • Avoid tight hairstyles: Hairstyles that pull on your hair, like tight ponytails or braids, can cause breakage and damage to your hair. If you must wear a tight hairstyle, make sure to use a hair tie made of a soft material, like fabric or elastic, to avoid pulling on your hair.
  • Brush your hair gently: Brushing your hair helps distribute the natural oils from your scalp throughout your hair, keeping it healthy and shiny. However, it is important to brush your hair gently, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots, to avoid causing breakage.
  • Use a wide-toothed comb: When your hair is wet, it is more prone to breakage, so it is important to be gentle when combing through it. Use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.

Maintenance

  • Trim your hair regularly: Split ends can make your hair look unhealthy and cause it to break more easily. Trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks can help get rid of split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and strong.
  • Protect your hair from the sun: The sun’s UV rays can damage your hair, causing it to become dry and prone to breakage. To protect your hair from the sun, wear a hat or use a hair product with UV protection when you are outside for extended periods of time.

By following these simple hair care tips, you can help keep your hair looking healthy, shiny, and strong. Remember to be gentle with your hair, and use products that are specifically formulated for your hair type to get the best results.
