I have a love-hate situation when it comes to flying. Not because I’m scared or anything, but thinking of all the planning and preparation that goes into it drives me wild!
I’m usually pretty organized, but something about being far from my home that makes my brain go into overload.
From packing to finalizing plans, here’s how to prepare for your flight like a boss!
Week Before Your Flight
1. Check the Weather
Typically, a week before my flight I start looking at the local weather and planning outfits.
I hate checking my luggage (always afraid it’ll get lost) so depending on how long I’m staying I try to pack as light as possible.
* Travel tip* If you’re going to a tropical place dresses are your best friend! There really is no need for anything else when it’s hot and humid plus dresses take up little space and can be dressed up or down.
2. Confirm Reservations
If you’re staying at a hotel, are doing activities, have a shuttle planned to your destination or whatever it may be, be sure you are confirmed for it all!
Last thing you need is to worry about after a flight is where you’re staying or how to get around.
One of my friends thought they had a reservation at a Vegas hotel in May but it turns out it was booked for March so she had to pay again!
When it comes to travel, I do all my communication through email so I have documents to reference if needed. I also make a courtesy call just in case but that’s a little excessive lol
3. Have A Plan
I’m the queen of planning, but once again, my brain turns off the day of a flight.
I’ve found having a plan ahead of time to be useful and it also helps with any anxiety I have because I know exactly what to expect.
Because Uber is a bitch, I try to avoid it when going to LAX so my plan usually includes getting to and from the airport, downtime activities and a back up plan just in case we miss a flight, there’s a delay or what have you.
I know, who plans downtime at the airport right? I’m the type of person that loves being busy and I always have to be doing something or I’ll go crazy!
Since international flights require you to be at the airport three hours before, I try to mentally prepare for the downtime but I always have something planned so I don’t lose my shit.
I’m also a freak that can’t sleep in public or moving things (like cars, planes, and trains) so I basically have to keep myself entertained lol
While at the airport or on the plane, I tend to catch up on books, I listen to podcasts (I love learning new things), I also take my Nintendo Switch that’s PERFECT for travel and I download documentaries or whatever show I’m in at the moment. I also use that time to plan blogs and content ideas 🙂
4. Make Sure All Your Bills Are Paid
This sounds dumb, but last thing you need is to miss a payment because you were on vacation.
Most of my bills are on auto-pay but I like to call in and make sure payment is made before my vacation.
This way I can see exactly how much money I have to spend and I’m not constantly worried about over-drafting or having my card declined, etc.
If you have a travel budget like I usually do, this also helps me ensure that I won’t go over that set budget.
Day Before Your Flight
5. Hydrate
The day before a flight it’s good to start hydrating your body as much as possible.
The plane’s high altitudes, dry cabin and lack of humidity make it easy for passengers to get dehydrated without even knowing.
6. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Because I already have extremely dry skin, I take all precautions when it comes to protecting my skin in the air.
Starting the day before my flight, I start using rich serums and moisturizers to help lock in extra moisture I may need to survive the dry cabin air.
I also do a hydrating face mask before bed to help my balance my skin before the next days travels.

7. Download Content
I made the mistake of thinking I would be able to use wifi at the airport to watch stuff and let’s just say NEVER again!
Ever since then I download content I want to watch the night before to my phone so I don’t have to worry about crappy wifi.
If you like to listen to music or podcasts, I suggest downloading playlists and podcast episodes too.
The last thing you want is to be wide awake on a red eye flight and have your screen on, or maybe you do want to be that person…idk lol I just feel like that’s rude haha
8. Pack
I don’t know about you, but I’m a last minute packer. I feel like the weather might change or something unexpected might happen so I like to wait until the night before to fully pack.
Packing the night before also gives me a piece of mind because I usually make a “to pack” list the week before so I basically run through the checklist while packing.
Day Of Flight
This is where all that planning pays off! You’re all packed up, you have your plan so all that’s left is to check in, board and enjoy your trip.
On the day of the flight, I do very little shuffling.
Depending on my flight time I:
- Check-in Online (it’s easy and saves so much time!)
- Bring snacks and a reusable water bottle
- Make sure my entertainment and moisturizer are easily accessible
And lastly, I let my plan fall into place and the pilot do his job.
